In New York City, thousands of people are connected by NYCmesh[dot]net
Each router is a node in that mesh network. Each household purchases and owns the router in their home. These nodes connect together to make up the network, which can operate from node to node, even if connections to the rest of the Internet are disrupted, for example, as happened during Hurricane Sandy in New York City.NYC Mesh is one of the largest volunteer-based, community-supported networks in the world, providing broadband connections to thousands for a small suggested donation.
