Telecom companies are churning out fiber-backed bonds to private equity firms in an effort to finance new fiber-optic networks. Altogether, they’ve issued $4 billion in 2023, more than the last two years combined, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal….To pay back the bonds, companies are pledging revenue from their existing internet contracts. This is such a good deal for Wall Street that smaller companies with worse credit can sell bonds to get more money at lower interest than they could through bank loans. Buying up fiber bonds is just one part of a shift toward technology and green energy projects by investment firms. A research firm predicts investment in the spaces to outpace real estate by 2026.
